Common fixes for FIFA 21 Stuttering and Lag issue

Among the fixes that you can try to solve the stuttering and lag issue of FIFA 21, there are some fundamental ones and some more advanced. Here, we ill first guide you on the most basic fixes that you can try to fix the stutter and Lag on your FIFA 21. If that does not resolve your issue, then you can move ahead to the more advanced fixes below.

Cap the FPS:

One of the primary reasons why most users suffer from stuttering and lag issues with FIFA 21 is due to uncapped FPS of FIFA 21. The developers of FIFA 21 want its users to experience FIFA in the best way possible, and therefore they have not enforced any capping on the frame rate for the game. But this can often lead to Lag and stuttering in the gameplay of FIFA 21. So open up the control panel or settings of NVIDIA or AMD(depending upon the GPU on your system) and cap the FPS to 60. This should reduce the stuttering quite a bit.

If that does not work, then try the next fix.

Change Vsync settings:

There is another feature called Vsync which could be the cause of your stuttering. Check if the Vsync for FIFA 21 is turned on or off on your system. If it was turned on, then disable it and if it was turned off then try enabling it. Nvidia users will find Vsync in NVIDIA control panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings > FIFA 21. Here set Vsync to On or Off, depending on what it was set by default.

If even this does not work, then the next solution mentioned below.

Change the mode of gameplay:

If you are playing FIFA 21 in the fullscreen mode, then that might be causing the Lag too. So you should try switching over to windowed gameplay. But just like Vsync, this also has two sides. If you are playing the game on windowed mode, then you should try switching over to a fullscreen mode. A quick way to disable fullscreen is to change the properties of the game’s executable file. Find the game file in your computer’s directory and when you find the exe file, right-click on it and choose Properties. Click on the Compatibility tab and then check the Disable fullscreen optimization option.

Some other fixes:

The fixes mentioned above are the most common ones, and one of those should do the trick for most FIFA 21 players. But if none of these three fixes worked for you, then move on to the other fixes mentioned below.

Update Graphics Drivers:

Having the latest version of graphics drivers is a must for gamers. From time to time, both NVIDIA and AMD release a driver update for their graphics cards. So depending on the manufacturer of your GPU, go to their website and download the latest version of drivers available for your GPU model and then install them onto your computer.

Now check whether there is still any lag or stuttering in the game. If it is there, then try the next solution.

Change AMD Radeon settings:

You can try making a few changes to the AMD Radeon settings to fix the stuttering.

  • Open the AMD Radeon Settings.
  • Click on Gaming.
  • Then click on Global Settings.
  • Set Anti-aliasing mode to Override application settings.
  • Then set the Anti-aliasing level to 2x.
  • Turn on the Anisotropic Filtering Mode.

  • Set Texture Filtering Quality to Performance.
  • Then set Wait for Vertical Refresh as Always off.
  • Set Tessellation Mode to Override application settings.
  • And finally, set Maximum Tessellation Level to 32x.

Change NVIDIA settings:

  • For the option “Specify the settings for this program” set “Power Management Mode” to “Prefer maximum performance”. Also, set Virtual Reality pre-rendered frames to 1.

Turn Off the game mode:

Windows 10 has a built-in game mode utility that lets you record and even takes screenshots of your gameplay. But sometimes this utility can also cause issues with gameplay. So try turning off the game mode and see if that fixes the stutter and lag issue on FIFA 21.

  • Press Windows Key + I, and it will open up Windows Settings.
  • Then click on Gaming.
  • Finally, you will see a window with a toggle under the Game bar. Disable it.

If even this did not fix your issue, then move on to the next solution.

  • Finally, go to the recycle bin and empty it.

Check whether or not the stuttering and lag issue is fixed or not. If you are still experiencing these problems with FIFA 21, then move on to the next solution.

Terminate unnecessary tasks running the background:

Disabling or terminating unnecessary programs and services can sometimes fix the lag and stutter issue with FIFA 21.

  • Press Windows Key + X and then choose Task Manager.
  • Here choose the processes you want to terminate by clicking on them and clicking the option End task.

Now after you have disabled most of the application in task manager, if you are still stuck with the stutter and lag then move on the next potential fix,

Disable Discord:

Discord usually does not create any issues for games, but if you reside in an area where the internet is not great, then you should try disabling discord entirely while playing FIFA 21. You can do this using the Task Manager method mentioned above.

Install FIFA 21 on SSD:

Traditional HDDs are slower, and if the cable used for connection is not that great, then you will face Lag and stutter in any game. So try switching over to an SSD. They are much faster than HDDs, and when it comes to games, an SSD will help launch and start the game much quicker than usual.

If even this does not work for you, then try the final fix mentioned below.

Set Launch Options on Steam:

  • Go to your library.
  • Right-click on FIFA 21 and choose Properties.
