In this tutorial, we will show you the steps to enable end-to-end encryption on Zoom. This has now become the de-facto app when it comes to video communications. Such has been its rise to fame during these unprecedented times, that it has now found a permanent abode in near about every working professional’s device. Beholding a plethora of features coupled with the ability to take up to 100 participants in one meeting deserves a lot of credit. However, when it came to the security front, users were left wanting for more, until now.

The app has now added an additional layer of security. Zoom allows you to enable end-to-end encryption for all your meetings. This will, in turn, result in enhanced privacy and data protection for your calls. These End-to-end (E2E) encrypted meetings can be enabled for all users in the account, for a group of users, or for your own use. The steps are slightly different for all three and hence we have covered them under separate sections. Follow along for the instructions.

How to Enable End-to-End Encryption on Zoom

There are a few caveats that you need to be aware of before enabling this functionality. The End-to End-Encryption is going to disable some Zoom features. These include the ability to join before host, cloud recording, streaming, live transcription, Breakout Rooms, polling, 1:1 private chat, and meeting reactions.

So if these limitations are too much to deal with, then instead of E2E, you could also select Enhanced Encryption. Furthermore, everyone part of a call needs to have this E2E enabled, otherwise they wouldn’t be able to join the meeting.

Likewise, to verify that the meeting is indeed encrypted, look out for the green shield icon at the upper left section of your screen (see above image). With that said, let’s get on with the steps to enable end-to-end encryption on Zoom.

End-to-End Encryption for all Users in an Account

  • Sign in to your Zoom account as an administrator.
  • Then from the navigation menu, head over to the Account Management section.
  • Go to Account Settings and click on Meetings.
  • Then go to the Security tab and enable Allow use of end-to-end encryption.
  • If you wish to make this E2E mandatory for all users in your account, then click on the lock icon. It is an optional setting and depends on the admin’s preference.
  • Now go to the Security section and select the desired encryption: E2E or Enhanced encryption and hit Save.

These were the steps to enable End-to-End Encryption in Zoom for all users in an account.

For a Group of Users

  • Sign in to your Zoom account as an administrator.
  • Then go to User Management > Group Management.
  • Select the desired group name from the list and click Settings.
  • Within that, go to the Meetings section and visit the Settings tab.
  • Enable the Allow use of end-to-end encryption from that section.
  • Again, clicking on the lock icon will make E2E mandatory for all users in that group.
  • Now go to the Security section, select E2E or Enhanced encryption, and click on Save.

With this, you have successfully enabled End-to-End Encryption in Zoom for a group of users.

End-to-end Encryption for Individual Zoom User

  • Sign in to Zoom with your credentials.
  • Go to Settings followed by Meetings.
  • Then head over to Security and enable the Allow use of end-to-end encryption option.
  • Go to the Security section and select the desired encryption: E2E or Enhanced encryption and hit Save.
