The Xposed module called Gmail Dark Theme Enabler, allows the users to use dark mode on the Gmail app on older Android versions. This module simply alters certain system settings for allowing the dark mode toggle visible for Gmail users on older Android versions. Moreover, you need to have root access on your device in order to run Xposed or EdXposed modules.
